LXR Software Support
How Do I?
What are the Server Requirements for Web-based Testing?
Hardware Requirements:
You will need a Windows-based server, running either Windows NT 4.0 Server or Windows
2000 Server. Please refer to Microsoft for required and recommended system hardware
to run the respective server operating system.
Software Requirements:
- Internet Information Services (IIS), version 4.0 or later
- Internet Services Manager
- LXR*TEST Web Server Extensions
- SMTP for sending web exam results via email (optional)
Getting the Server Ready for Hosting Web-based Exams:
Note: Please install IIS prior to installing the
LXR*TEST Web Server Extensions.
Installing IIS: (The following information incorporates discussion
from Appendix H of the User's Guide.)
Windows 2000:
- From the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs, then Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Select Internet Information Services (IIS).
- Click on the Details button.
- Select each of the following required IIS components:
- Common Files
- Internet Information Services Snap-In
- World Wide Web Server
- SMTP Service (optional)
- Proceed with the installation process.
Windows NT 4.0:
- From the NT 4.0 Option Pack (you will need to download from Microsoft), select the
following required IIS components:
- Internet Services Manager
- World Wide Web Server
- From the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), version 1.5 (you will need to
download from Microsoft), select the following required MDAC components:
- Data Sources
- MDAC: ADO, ODBC, OLE DB
- Also install:
- Microsoft Management Console*
- NT Option Pack Common Files
- Transaction Server* -- Transaction Server Core Components
Note: After installing any Windows components, you are recommended
to reinstall the latest update or service pack files.
Installing LXR*TEST Web Server Extensions: (The following
information is taken from Chapter 6 of the User's Guide.)
Note: You must physically be at the server to install
the Web Server Extensions. Remote installation (to the server) of the Web Server
Extension files is NOT recommended.
- Browse the contents of the LXR*TEST CD.
- Open the WebServer folder.
- Run the Setup.exe file.
- When prompted, enter the LXR*TEST software key. Installation only will proceed when
a correct software key has been entered.
- When prompted, specify the IIS folder (e.g., C:\Inetpub\Wwwroot). The Web Server
Extensions installation will create an LXRWeb subfolder, which will store both the
web-testing system files, as well as your created LXR*TEST web exams.
- (Optional) When prompted, enter the DNS or IP address for your SMTP mail server
(e.g., mailserver.domain.com). In order to have web examinee score reports automatically
be e-mailed once they complete their exam, you will need to specify a valid SMTP
mail server.
- Follow any remaining directions as presented.
Setting Up LXRWeb Sharing and Permissions:
Once you have installed both IIS and the LXR*TEST Web Server Extensions, you will
need to do/verify the following:
- Create a virtual directory for the LXRWeb application in IIS
- Share the LXRWeb folder (and subfolders) and set appropriate minimum file permissions
- Add the annonymous Internet guest account (and other necessary accounts) and set
the appropriate access permissions
Note: For guidelines on how to set the necessary
file sharing and web access permissions, please refer to the following page, entitled:
"What are the Sharing and Permissions Requirements for Web-based Testing?"
